Barton Springs

Blue and green and beautiful. (And cold, avg 68 degrees F.)
Weekday afternoons are the absolute best time to visit (Thursdays they clean the pool, but open at 7pm). The springs vary from very shallow (and slippery) to deep (with branches poking you under the water). There is a diving board, changing facilities (not very private, but showers, lockers- bring your own lock, and restrooms). Admission is $3, with discounts for seniors and the hours are generous 5am-10pm most days.

My mom learned to swim here in the 1960's, and on any given day you will find a cross-section of Austin here, young and old. Nudity used to be an issue, but today you will mostly see it only in the large open locker/changing rooms.

Suggestions- Bring a wetsuit top, flotation device for the kids/weak swimmers, as it is cold, and where it is not too deep to stand, it is slimy.

Do not- put anyone on your shoulders! We got the whistle for this. :(
